Martens are well known for being excellent tree climbers. Here is an appreciation post of Martens in trees.
All Martens are omnivores. They will typically eat squirrels, rabbits, mice, birds, fish, insects, and eggs. They are also capable of eating berries, nuts, or even junk food like chips and cookies. Because of their diverse diet, lots of people in areas inhabited by Martens will leave old, unwanted food on their porch, which Martens will come and take.
American Martens may live up to be 15 years old if raised in captivity. The oldest wild Marten was 14.5 years old. Martens become sexually mature after only one year, but do not start effectively copulating until 2 years of age. They can breed for the remainder of their lives. Mothers give birth to small litters, ranging from 1 to 5 babies. Baby Martens are called Kits
If any of you know me from other sites, you will probably know that my favorite animal in the entire world is the Marten. So much so, that I’ve decided to create an entire tumblr dedicated to these fantastic creatures. I’ll mostly post pictures, but occasionally fun facts and trivia on them. Please enjoy!
